Bruce MacDonald<p>"The Laymans had ties to the abolitionist movement, and it was one of the few cemeteries that were not segregated. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History October 1, 1851: 10,000 New Yorkers busted up a police station in Syracuse to free William "Jerry" Henry, a craftsman who was fleeing slavery in the south. He had been arrested by a US Marshall during the anti-slavery Liberty Party's state convention. Citizens of the city stormed the sheriff's office, freed Henry and helped him escape to Canada via the Underground Railroad. There were a lot of abolitionists living in New York, especially in Syracuse, including Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, and a large number of abolitionist Quakers and Unitarians. Consequently, Syracuse became known as the great central depot on the Underground Railroad. Jerry Rescue Day was celebrated every October 1 in Syracuse, until the start of the Civil War. The annual event included speeches, poetry, music, and organizing against slavery. They also collected funds to keep the Underground Railroad running in central New York.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/UndergroundRailroad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UndergroundRailroad</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/frederickdouglass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>frederickdouglass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/harriettubman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>harriettubman</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/police" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>police</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/blm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blm</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/quaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>quaker</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/unitarian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>unitarian</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/newyork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>newyork</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BlackMastadon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackMastadon</span></a></p>
Flipboard Culture Desk<p>Barry Jenkins' modern masterpiece, "The Underground Railroad," is about to be released by the Criterion Collection as a four-disc Blu-ray set that includes a companion film, "The Gaze," a graphic novel adaptation of an unfilmed episode, audio commentary by Jenkins, and more. As well as these extras, viewers can also watch the 10-part series without commercials (on Amazon Prime, ads are scattered through the adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel). <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://flipboard.com/@IndieWire" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>IndieWire</span></a></span> spoke to Jenkins about how the Criterion collaboration came about, the importance of physical media, what it was like to make the show and his feelings on commercials. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History November 9, 1851: Kentucky marshals abducted abolitionist minister Calvin Fairbank from Jeffersonville, Indiana, under the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. They took him to Kentucky to stand trial for helping a slave escape. Fairbank was an activist on the Underground Railroad. He spent over 17 years in prison and was lashed 35,000 times. He was pardoned in 1864. He was believed to have helped at least 47 people escape slavery. Fairbank wrote a memoir in 1890 called “Rev. Calvin Fairbank During Slavery Times: How He "Fought the Good Fight" to Prepare "the Way." He died in near-poverty, in Angelica, New York, in 1898, at the age of 81. </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WorkingClass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WorkingClass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/blm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blm</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/UndergroundRailroad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UndergroundRailroad</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/memoir" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>memoir</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/biography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biography</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>
